What have you done from morning? Forget works! Most of us, nowadays do not even communicate properly and as long as we are getting free time, we tend to scroll the pages of social media. We are used to it. Spending half of the time of the day on watching others’ vacation pictures and daunted book covers which they actually do not read or any celebrity’s work out video and we somehow ignore the fact that doing this things are not actually meaningful but anyhow we do not stop it. We keep on doing it. According to the report of David Cohen, a person spends 4 years of his life on social media which is indeed not a healthy habit. So, Instagram is trying to act for the benefit of mass and want it’s users to spend time meaningful.
Recently Insta CEO Kevin Systrom used his Twitter to announce that the social media platform has come up with a new feature named ‘usage insights’. This will allow instagrammers to track how much time they are spending on this particular social media.
This iconic decision of Instagram is showing that, this social media is okay with sacrificing ad views for the sake of the benefits of users. According to the theoretical aspect, the company perhaps is trying to freak the users out by showing them the amount of their precious time which they are literally wasting by seeing some unnecessary videos and memes. They are actually highlighting on the fact that time is flitting which users can use for meaningful purposes. This ‘usage insight’ can help the parents to detect how much time the kids are spending on social media as well.
Do you want to know who is the person behind ‘time spent’ feature discovery?
The woman who coded such an amazing feature is Jane Manchum Wong. She has discovered the code inside the Instagram for Android application package (APK). History is saying that this is not the first time Wong has discovered some un-launched features. She is the woman who found out Facebook Avatars and Twitter’s encrypted DM’s.
We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional.

As far as the report is concern, it is still not known how the platform will present the informations – whether it will break it down daily, weekly, monthly or feature wise (just like stories and explore) but reports are suggesting that this can really reduce the number of users in Instagram as the continuous vision of wasted time can keep someone away from using social media for a long time as the person will be conscious about the time.
It is observed that 2018 is the year of self development strategy making for the maestro social media platforms. Few days back, Google announced some new features for its Android operating system which will keep a track on how often one person uses certain apps. This was intending to allow the users to take a break from their smartphones. Not only Google, Facebook is also following the same path. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘Fixing Facebook’ also comes around the same strategy. According him, this ‘Time well spent’ is actually motivating users to do something concrete and this drives the users towards using Facebook less.
